Online Reading

Reading has always been my favourite pastime. One night in 2008, I discovered how to access books online.  Project Gutenberg was the first magic mantra! I sat up half the night to read my first ebook: a play by Oscar Wilde.

Herodotus was next on the list. After following Herodotus on his travels 2500 years ago, now I enjoy reading ebooks on different online sites. There is so much stuff out there, that one is spoilt for choice. How do I choose the books that I really want to read? Looking at reviews and ratings is helpful. But not always.

In early 2012, when I was in New York, my son and daughter-in-law gifted me a Kindle.  Another Wow! experience... Now the Kindle has a special place by my bedside!

So much to read, so little time...

Slow DanceA Poem

After my mother died in 2008, people asked me: "Don't you feel lonely, living all by yourself? How do you pass the time?"

And I thought: "Pass the time? Time's running out!"

As one grows older, one has a heightened sense of urgency  - the sands of time and all that. Once your parents are gone, it hits you afresh: hey, now I'm in the front line. Then I asked myself: "Should I be rushing through my days doing this, that and the other? As fast as I can?"

I recall a poem, supposedly written by a terminally ill young girl, lying in a New York Hospital and counting her last days.

Have you ever watched kids
On a merry-go-round?
Or listened to the rain
Slapping on the ground?
Ever followed a butterfly's erratic flight?
Or gazed at the sun into the fading night?

You better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Do you run through each day
On the fly?
When you ask How are you?
Do you hear the reply?
When the day is done
Do you lie in your bed
With the next hundred chores
Running through your head?

You'd better slow down
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

Ever told your child,
We'll do it tomorrow?
And in your haste,
Not see his sorrow?
Ever lost touch,
Let a good friendship die
Cause you never had time
To call and say,'Hi'

You'd better slow down.
Don't dance so fast.
Time is short.
The music won't last.

When you run so fast to get somewhere
You miss half the fun of getting there.
When you worry and hurry through your day,
It is like an unopened gift
Thrown away.

Life is not a race,
Do take it slower.
Hear the music
Before the song is over.
